Recovery Hooks

Postby stan_bossom on Fri Jun 29, 2007 6:50 pm

I've seen a recovery hook at BNT Masterton that has a 10,000 Ib rating stamped on the side of it. But the 12mm bolts aren't 8.8 high tensile.
I think they are "bush ranger" brand. The attendant told me they were made in China but sold under the Australian brand. Anyone tried these?
Or are these the ones that straighten out or snap?

Cheers

I prefer to stick with known brands, they have been tried and tested for years.

Karl at Wellington 4wd specialists did destruction testing on a few brands for the Wellington club.

I cant remember exactly which ones had what ratings, but the gist of it was the Supercheap Auto ones died at very low ratings, the "known brands" from 4wd shops all just passed their ratings and the winner were the bushranger ones from Repco ($24ea when I got mine there) which were rated at 8000 but straightened out at 9800 I think it was.

He replaced any bolts with 12mm 8.8's before testing.

If you want the exact details I'm sure he wouldnt mind a call, his details at http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/cfurniss/.

Cheers,
Matt

And from memory...i think they came with 12mm 8.8's as standard too...

Go Repco!

Although the bolt heads surface rust so you'll have to paint them black to keep them looking all spik n span like the nice black hooks!

The Place to get recovery hooks is from Cooks in Petone or BNT.
The BNT ones you replace the bolts with 8.8's, these are the tow hooks
that have been tested by the Wellington Club. They seem to by all there
tow hooks from Cooks and BNT. If you would like to know more i have
the magazine with the test results and the correct way to install a tow hook
according to the CCVC.

:D

Best hooks are Toyota or Nissan factory hooks... From my experience , they dont break or straighten out...but watch out ,, something else will fail and then you will have to duck :!: :!:
